This series explores the unsettling effect of near-perfect replications. When you witness a robot acting incredibly human, like Alicia Vikander in Alex Garland’s brilliant film Ex Machina, you wonder about what separates humans from humanoid robots. How is it that something fake can feel so real?
These images explore the uncanny valley: the disturbing discomfort we experience when a robot is humanlike, but not fully human. Other by placing otherworldly figures into the fantastical paintings of the Hudson River School. As Artificial Intelligence develops, how do we delineate between what is authentic and what is fabricated? What role do aesthetics play in the visual distinction of truth? Is the Creature in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus redeemable? Or is he as a technological (not fully biological) invention beyond forgiveness?
