Hospice + Birthing Center is a project that combine the start of life and the end of life within one building. he site is located in Buffalo, NY in the historic Polonia district.

First, a case study project was considered. I researched Herzog and de Meuron’s 165 REHAB in Basel, Switzerland. This project works to bring the natural environment into the rehab center via daylighting, screening, covered walkways, and more. It is intentionally designed to not feel sterile — like a typical hospital.

Next, I used parametric design program: Grasshopper, develop a script that will allow for 9 iterations of surfaces in the x, y, and z plane.

Then, I developed a patient room that connects to a lounge with the parametric surface. This patient room / lounge module was arranged in the floor plan. And, the parametric surface was manipulated to create the undulating facade.
